The Nicoya Peninsula

Discover the art of the Chorotega ceramics before submerging yourself into the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean; although it is the most visited area, you will always find a nice, isolated, almost always sunny bay. In the hottest season of the year, this area is very different from the rest of the country with its vast, ochre- toned savannah and a panorama identified by its white zebus and the "vaqueanos" (local cowboys). The animals are waiting. Along the dirt roads, it is common to find monkeys, iguanas, deer, and birds of prey; the sea is no exception. During a boat trip, you can see manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphins...

Guanacaste often has terrible fires. This is mainly due to the fact that the area is very dry, and in the 70's, the government gave subsidies to export beef (or zebu). Therefore, there was intensive forest destruction in order to create pastures. However, planting trees (for cutting or reforestation) and protecting remaining forests allowed the recovery of 26% of the lost forest areas. In 2010, this equated to a forest density of more than 50% in Costa Rica and the objective is to be carbon neutral in 2021. According to the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, reforestation is the best way to fight against climate change.
